People, in this case males, were extremely reluctant to give up privileges they have come to think of as essential to their economic and personal well being. Viewing women as second class citizens and property. Blacks and the institution of slavery was also seen as a right which they did not want wrested from their hands.
The Curious Institution on which the Southern Elite depended economically and for the continuance of their culture was allowed to stay in place, despite assurances to the contrary.
And although some New England states moved to affirm women in their rights of property and franchise this was successfully opposed - with statutes which began the process of dictating the control of property and performance of individuals through the control asserted by government.
We don't need to get into the rationalizations and justifications for this. Today they would be seen as blatantly and embarrassingly stupid and acknowledged to be without merit. The Theory of the Homunculus was long since debunked by science.
In addition, forces were stirring in Europe with the Marxist Revolutions of 1848 which hinged on centralized governments as essential. The rationalizations for this was economic equality. The reality was that Marxists were heavily subsidized by the Rothschild banking cabal and mercantilists. They saw the end of their long con if all individuals were equally recognized as having rights.
Legislation, and the potential regulatory power of government were needed so the class system, essential to the thinking of the elite, I call Greedville, could continue its reign of domination.
Lincoln's War for Northern Aggression imposed the regulatory infrastructure which dominates Americans today. The accrual of power to the Federal government when into fast forward with the public relations campaign around slavery. Not that slavery was right, but killing people was not the way to correct the problem.
Letting the South leave and suffer the costs of enforcing slavery while the Northern States and Movement for Abolition continued to increase these costs would have worked far more rapidly and with less trauma to all.
Instead, every generation since has been confronted with the problem of ideas, based on Marxism, dressed up like an old whore in lace and satin, to seduce them into seeing government as the solution and not the real problem. (With apologies to women and men selling services on the free market.)
All the wars fought, from the Civil War through those today, have been wars of economic aggression. Policies, such as the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Reserve System are examples of economic war without the unfurling of flags and uniforms. The dead do not come home in coffins but are buried by debt.
But there remained in America a solid adherence to the ideas once identified as 'Classical Liberalism' and then as 'Conservatism,' until the pivotal campaign of Barry Goldwater.
Goldwater, the obvious replacement for Robert Taft as Mr. Conservative, was a figure who could capture the hearts of Americans with his no-nonsense and pungent quotes. His personal history as an aviator in war, and as a businessman also helped.
The story of how the Cabal destroyed his reputation and political future also includes the redefining of the word, 'Conservative.' This allowed for the later redefinition which still haunts us today of, NeoConservative.

The other issue to keep in mind is this. The false dichotomy of 'Private', meaning individual, now redefined to include 'corporate,' and 'Government.'
Two choices, neither of which can provide stability because to be effective individuals need to have skills for cooperating, the first form of insurance, and accountability is tough when dealing with those who claim immunity for what they do.
Looong before government was more than an ambitious warrior who wanted to keep more of the loot than his contemporaries, the institution where human action took place was the community.
People had to persuade each other and know their ideas and suggestions would be judged by things like, "Did that guy ever return that awl I loaned him?" and "Aren't her kids the ones who kicked dirt on Old Sarah?"
Community is where we are known for what we do and these acts are compared to what we say. It all begins by being, and acting, your word.
